Alejandro Colunga Biography

Guadalajara, Mexico, 1948

Alejandro Colunga is a Mexican artist who has gained international recognition as part of a talented generation of visionaries.

His work is characterized by the intensity of his vision and his passionate expressionism, and by his attraction to the unexplainable, unusual situations, and what we generally consider to be fantasy. This is evident in his continual fascination with the transformation of the living to the dead. In his paintings Colunga weaves stories with the drama of contemporary horrors that, mixed with the trauma of fantasy, become truly painful; portraits terribly real and sarcastically humorous.

He studied architecture for thee years before dedicating himself to painting in 1971. He has also extensively studied music, anthropology, and languages.
