Master Ukranian sculptor linked to the CUBIST movement in the early twentieth century. Archipenko´s work uses the human figure a platform for analysing volume, space and geometric planes. Like Naum Gabo in the United States and Henry Moore in the United Kingdom, Archipenko began to look beyond scultpure´s solid forms, concluding that spaces and voids are as important as solid mass. His experiments with these ‘antivolumes’, realised using materials that allowed him to achieve effects such as transparency and reflection, placed Archipenko at the vanguard of modern art.
