Andre Masson Biography

A French master, Andre Masson is associated with both Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism.

The trajectory of Masson’s artistic life is full of twists and turns; inspiration by the work of Cezanne; an interest in cubism because of his friendship with Juan Gris; the beginnings of Surrealism; an approximation of Expressionism; the return of his Surrealist style during his exile in America, and finally the arrival of quasi abstraction with influences of oriental culture and Zen philosophy. In all of these stages, however, there are a series of constants that fed Masson’s artistic creation: nature, violence, metamorphosis, and mythology.
