Whether you consider angels to be divine messengers, spiritual guides, or the stuff of legend, you will find something to marvel at in Chuck Fischer's beautifully illustrated Angels: A Pop-Up Book. Fischer's original art, inspired by classic images from art history, is crafted into astoundingly intricate three-dimensional pop-ups with fold-outs and moveable parts. Angels brings to life the most captivating stories of these celestial beings, from the angels of the zodiac to Biblical angels to angels in the arts and popular culture. Gorgeous; Must Have For Angel-Lovers, 2009-11-22
by Sandra Kirkland (High Point, North Carolina United States)
Angels is the latest pop-up book by Chuck Fisher, complementing others he's done such as Christmas In New York and Great American Houses and Gardens. It is a stunning, gorgeous book that would make a perfect book to leave out for visitors to open and spend time with.

Each page opens to an amazing 3-D popup. It's difficult to give the sense of how intricate and eye-catching each popup is. These were done by Bruce Foster, a master paper engineer. The reader can look at these again and again, finding something new to delight the eye on each viewing.

Along with the popup on each set of pages, there are informational sections on each set of pages. The pages are broken into categories. The Origins Of Angels exploring the historical timelines and all the cultures that had a history of angels. Angels as Messengers look at Biblical angel messengers such as the burning bush with Moses, or the angels that saved Daniel in the lion's den. A Hierarchy Of Angels explains the six tiers of angels and the differences between such entities as cherubim, seraphim, thrones, dominions, virtues and powers. There is an entire set of pages devoted to the Archangel Michael, with what I found to be the most visually appealing popup with rich red tones and an elaborate dragon. The page for the Archangel Gabriel talks of how he was the one who told Mary her babe would be the Savior, and explores whether Gabriel is the only female angel. There is a section on angels in art and music. The final popup is on Angels of the Zodiac, with each sign assigned a specific angel.

This is an amazing book. The intricate popups with their moveable parts, and the text explaining angels make this a feast for the eyes as well as the brain. This book is recommended for all readers, and those who are able to view it are lucky indeed.

Stunning pop-up book for grown-ups, 2009-10-23

ANGELS by Chuck Fischer is an extraordinary book. When it came in the mail, Carl chuckled because I'd received a pop-up book. Once I opened it and started turning the pages, he stopped laughing and starting gasping. I cannot describe just how gorgeous and stunning this book is. This is not a kids' pop-up book. The paper engineer on this project was Bruce Foster and he does a phenomenal job - I cannot begin to imagine the time and work involved in creating something like this.

This book is more than brilliant illustrations and pop-up work, though. The text, written by Curtis Flowers, is chock full of information about angels of all kinds. This book has them all - Eastern Angels, Mythological Angels, Biblical Angels, Secular Angels and Angels of the Zodiac.

ANGELS is a fascinating book and I've discovered something new every time I've picked it up. I learned that Archangel Michael is the greatest archangel in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. I also learned that most Biblical Angels are male. My only complaint with the book is a very minor one - some of the text is difficult to read because of the pop-ups.

If you know anyone who loves angels or art, ANGELS would make a fabulous gift. I know I would be thrilled to receive something like this.
Amazing, 2009-10-21

Thanks to Hachette Book Group for my copy of this colorful pop-up book. No one does pop-up books as well as Chuck Fischer!

Although children will enjoy it, in no way is this a children's book; it is created for adults and is a comprehensive study of angels arranged into three sections: "Messengers," "A Hierarchy of Angels," and "Secular Angels." Text is interspersed throughout the book by inserting booklets--themselves tiny works of art. A good idea is having the "Acknowledgment" and the "Image Credit" pages as pull-outs.

This volume is smaller than other works of the author; perhaps because the price is less than the others. Nonetheless, it is large enough to do the job. I would encourage careful handling to preserve this treasure. This would make a marvelous gift.
Simply stunning, 2009-10-21

I always loved pop up books when I was younger. They were 'special' books, kept on a separate shelf. I still love them today and Angels by Chuck Fischer is destined for a separate shelf as well. An adult shelf though, this one's not for kids to play with!

Angels or celestial spirits appear in many languages and traditional religions including Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Angels covers the history and origins of angels including biblical, secular, arts and music, the zodiac and much more.

Fischer has created absolutely gorgeous artwork and paper engineer Bruce Foster has taken that art and produced some of the most intricate pop ups I've ever seen. The colours are rich as is the detail. But it's not just pop ups, it's pull outs and fold outs too, little booklets within the book. I tried to take a picture to show you one of the pop ups, but it just didn't do it justice. My favourite was of the archangel Gabriel. The text is a fascinating collection of historical fact and lore relating to angels.

Turning each page is like unwrapping a present. You really have to stop and savour each page and look at all the detail. Although I must admit, the first thing I did was open every pop up and then I went back to read each page! This would make a phenomenal Christmas gift that could be enjoyed over and over again throughout the year.
Absolutely Stunning, 2009-10-19

I had previously read/admired Fisher's previous book Genesis and was completely in awe of it. Therefore when I opened up this book, I was expecting nothing less. I was not disappointed. This book is absolutely gorgeous and leaves you saying "wow!". The book is separated into three categories: Angels as Messengers, The Hierarchy of Angels and Secular Angels. Even though the pop ups are the main draw of the book, the text that accompanies isn't just filler material. There's history and culture to learn about and it really goes in depth about the study of angels. It's extremely informative and well worth the read. Also included are paintings of classical angels throughout the years from all over the world.

The main draw of the book of course is the pop ups and they are a sight to behold. This book basically brings art to life in full color 3-D images. The scene where the Virgin Mary is confronted by the angel Gabriel leaps off the page in a Renaissance style while the Origins of Angels page shows angels from the Eastern point of view. The pop ups are all extremely jaw dropping but my personal favorite is probably the one of Daniel in the Lion's Den. This one is huge as it overextends the covers and it's just absolutely beautiful. Also this is one of my favorite Bible stories so to see it in this format is just totally awesome.

Please note though, that while this book is a pop up book, it is NOT necessarily for kids. Don't think you can pass this off to a 5 year old and have them spend an afternoon playing with it. The pop ups are MUCH more intricate that that of a pop up book aimed at kids and the text is aimed at an adult audience. This book is good for a family to own but I personally would recommend looking at WITH your kids and not just hand it to them (unless they are huge angel fans).

This book is a must for fans of angels and those of classical works of art. Chuck Fischer has made me a fan of his works and now I'm looking forward to future releases from him. These books would make great gifts for the holiday season.
