Design at Home: Designing Your Living Room

One of the greatest mistakes people make when designing their living room is that they forget that it is a room for living. Originally, a rather formal affair, the living room functioned as a room wherein hosts impressed visitors with their priceless possessions and luxurious upholstery. Nowadays, living rooms have a variety of uses and can be a social hotspot for family and guests, a cocooning corner to relax and enjoy a good book, a place to enjoy your favorite painting and, of course, a place to entertain.

Making a list of how you use your living room can be extremely helpful before designing it. Together with your personal decorating style, this will determine which products and furniture you need to create the perfect living room.

No living room should be without seating, but the possibilities therefore are endless: couches, comfortable armchairs or contemporary seating alternatives are just a few options. Bookshelves and entertainment centers should be considered, if you plan on reading or watching TV in your living room on a regular basis. Occasional tables, side tables or coffee tables are useful to work or eat on a temporary basis, while plants and lush fabrics can transform this room into a room you love.  Lighting, always an essential element for setting the mood, should not be forgotten.

While liberal use of vibrant colors is a widespread choice for living rooms, some might prefer a more serene color scheme. Ultimately, the most important thing is that you enjoy spending time in this room for living, both on your own and in company.
