Since turning into a public collection in 1937, the Guggenheim permanent collection has evolved from six different private collections: Solomon´s R. Guggenheim’s non-objective art; Peggy Guggenheim’s collection of abstract and surrealist works, Dr. Geuseppe Penza di Baume´s collection of minimalist, post-minimalist and conceptual pieces; Justin Thannhauser´s selection of impressionist, post-impressionist and modern artworks; Karl Nierendorf´s German expressionist works and Katherine Drier´s avant-garde pieces. These collections are shared by the Venice, Berlin and Bilbao Guggenheim Museums.
