One of the nation's largest museuems devoted to contemporary art, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) offers some of the the most thought-provoking art created since 1945: painting, sculpture, photography, video and film, and performance. MCA is located near the historic Water Tower in the heart of downtown Chicago, with a great view of Lake Michigan.
The MCA collection includes holds almost 6,000 artworks representing trends in art after 1945 in all media and genres: paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photography, video, film, installations, and artists' books. Among the greatest strengths of the MCA Collection are surrealism of the 1940s and 1950s, minimalism of the 1960s, conceptual art and photography from the 1960s to the present, recent installation art, and art by Chicago-based artists.
Its permanent collection includes art by artists like: Francis Bacon, Alexander Calder, Christo, Tony Cragg, Ann Hamilton, Jeff Koons, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Iñigo Maglano, Matta, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Dennis Oppenheim, Ed Paschke, Raymond Pettibon, Richard Prince, Thomas Ruff, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Julian Schnabel, Tony Tasset, and H.C. Westermann.
