Following a career in television, James began oil painting. Not long after she began painting, James was a finalist in the national competition run by Artist and Illustrators magazine. James was then exhibited by Bell Fine Art in Winchester and in London's Public Eye competition. Additionally, James’ work is published by Washington Green.
James describes her early influences, stating “Our family garden, best described as 'unstructured', provided rich pickings for a colour junkie. Scorching crimson roses, tangerine lords and ladies, piercingly blue cornflowers…I would sit on a mat, on the grass, bathed in sunshine, trance like, drinking it all in.” Inspired by the effects of light and color, James strives to capture such moments in her artworks.
