Motherwell, Robert

January 34, 1915, Aberdeen, Washington - July 16th, 1991, Cape Cod, Massachusettes

American Abstract Expressionist painter best known as one of the founding members of the "New York School". The group included some of the most influencial and innovative artists of the mid-twentieth century, including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Philip Guston.

Like his colleagues, Motherwell devolped a distinctive style within the movement. He preferred using the starkness of black acrylic paint as one of the basic elements of his paintings. One of his more well-known techniques involved diluting his paint with turpentine to create a shadow effect.

Motherwell studied at Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia and as a result became an articulate spokesperson for the emerging expressionist movement. A lucid and engaging writer, his essays provide an enlightening window into the art form.
