As a homeschool mom, I'm always looking for good quality educational books for my children. I found this little art book at a yard sale and thought the children would enjoy it. The only problem we've had is that they fight over who gets to use it next. I actually enjoy sketching some of the little critters in the book myself from time to time and ALL my children - ages 6 to 13 - just love it. Of course the drawings aren't higher level art class type material, but the author does teach the basic strokes and shows the reader how to take shapes such as triangles, circles, lines, squares, etc. and turn those shapes into the little animals you create. It's fabulous. ANYONE could draw with this book. And quite honestly, I love these types of drawings - simple pen or pencil drawings without a lot of frill. We usually use a black pen for the lines and then fill in with colored pencils.
For homeschoolers in particular, this book would make a particularly nice addition to your art supplies. Students can use the book with an adult during planned lessons or completely independently when they just want to sketch informally. With the focus on basic shapes and concepts of drawing animals, homeschool parents could use this book as a semester or year's complete art curriculum for a preschool, kindergarten, or early elementary age child.
In summary, this is a fabulous book and the little sketches are fun for young children and even for more advanced or older students!

Ed Emberley does drawing books that anyone can accomplish. I rememberusing them in the 70's, but they are still as effective. My 6 year old likes it and said that she has done some of the drawings in school.

It uses simple shapes to draw animals. Young kids, 4 year old or under should be able to follow it. Don't expect to draw pretty animals or show any imaginations from the drawing. It is an ok book for kids to kill some time by themselves because it is easy to follow. You can leave the book with kids and go do your own laundry. I don't think it is a good book for those who are serious about art and drawing.
Pass it on!,

This was my first art book and now it is my son's first art book!
If you have never seen these books, go to your library. Then order your own so your kid can scribble on them!
