A renowned American photographer, Eve Arnold is most famous for her intimate images of Marilyn Monroe. She has also photographed Queen Elizabeth II, Jackie Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Joan Crawford, among others. Her sympathetic approach towards her subjects allows her to deftly capture a closeness attained by few others, both in these portraits, as well as in her work in China, Russia, South Africa, and Afghanistan.
Arnold began photographing while working at a photo-finishing plant in New York. She later studied with Alexei Brodovitch, Harper’s Bazaar’s art director, at New York City’s New School, and became the first female member of Magnum Photos agency, in 1955.
She currently lives and works in Great Britain.
