Marsden Hartley
(Maine, 1877- Ellsworth, 1943)

A leading American exponent of the early 20th century American avant-garde, his worked with his personalized variations of styles, such as Cubism, Expressionism and others.

He became closely associated with the New York art dealer Alfred Stieglitz and his group that included painters Arthur Dove, John Marin, and Georgia O Keeffe, and photographer Paul Strand. Amongst his most well known paintings are his semi-abstract works depicting his despise for war and at the same time the spectacle of the German military, works like A German Officer (Whitney Museum, New York) and Painting No. 5 (Whitney Museum, New York) and Portrait of a German Officer ( MOMA, New York).
