David Hockney
(Bradford, 1937)
British painter, photographer and printmaker, considered to be the best known artist of his generation from Britain.
Trained at the Bradford School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art, his fellow students included R.B. Kitaj, Peter Phillips, Allen Jones and Derek Boshier. A leading proponent of the Pop art, his first solo exhibition was held at the gallery of John Kasmin followed by a retrospective exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Known for depicting autobiographical themes, whether places or people, such as his renowned pieces depicting swimming pools and other scenes of Los Angeles, his adopted home and the acclaimed Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy (Tate Gallery, London).
Also, known for his graphic artworks, his etchings have included illustrations for Poems and Six Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, by Cavafy. He has also made several prints on various homoerotic themes.
David Hockney has written two books about his work: David Hockney by David Hockney and That´s the Way I see It, published in 1976 and 1993, respectively. A Bigger Splash, a biographical movie about the artist, was released in 1974.
