Konstantin Grcic Biography

Konstantin Grcic was born in Munich, Germany in 1965. After studying as a cabinet maker at Parnham College in England, he completed his masters in furniture design at the Royal College of Art in London, in 1990.

He worked for a year in Jasper Morrison?s shop before opening his own design practice called Konstantin Grcic industrial Design in Munich.

He has developed furniture, products and lighting. His products are described as pared down, simple, and minimalist. What sets him apart from other minimalists is that he defines function in human terms, combining maximum formal strictness with mental acuity and humor. Although he stuck to this approach for the first ten years of his work, he has begun to experiment computer design software that creates more fluid forms.

Grcic's products have received prestigious design awards. In 2000, he was nominated as the ?Guest of Honour? at the Interieur Biennial in Kortrijk/Belgium and presented an extensive show of his work. The MAYDAY-lamp was selected into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and won the Compasso D?Oro in 2001.

Although his designs seem minimalist at first glance they actually contain a pleasing restraint that is still conceptually complex and reflect logic and intellectual rigor. He has created drinking glasses, rubbish bins, a portable, multi-purpose May Day lamp, and a Coup tableware series that combined porcelain and metal for the first time. He has worked with many different famous clients such as Agape, Driade, Flos and more.
