Artist's Statement

“Ladies, flowers and birds are among the main motives in the artistic creation of R. Biciunas. The women depicted by Rimas are festive, mysterious and eccentric. Frequently they are like prima donnas or heroines of dramas, stepping into the pictures from the stage with an enigmatic smile and a flirting eye. The ladies portrayed by the artist are colourful like flowers, while his flowers are chic like ladies. The artist’s creation is an unending fiesta of colours. On the canvass, he firmly holds the contrasting colours in hand –green, red, orange, blue, and is able to arrange the drum sounds to the vibrant melody of violin. Colour halftones are rarely seen, everything is flooded with dashing hues. Most painters of Rimas’s generation created in an expressionistic style, influenced by Antanas Gudaitis. Many artists were seeking ugliness in the wild and in humans, and this feature became a fashionable "aesthetics." Here R. Bičiūnas’s and his fellow artists’ paths diverged. The painter has neither lived nor studied in Paris, however his art is ‘Parisian’ in character. The bright and colourful canvasses are close to the famous “Ècole de Paris“ tradition which here in Lithuania was embodied by Algirdas Petrulis, Jonas Čeponis, and Antanas Gudaitis.“ Aloyzas Stasiulevičius (painter, art critic)
