Madrid, Spain, 1957 -
An established self-taught Spanish artist, Jose Luis Viejo Palacios works in an expressionist style.
He lived in France and the Basque Country between 1965 and 1973, where he became familiar with drawing and painting, and began a stage of investigation and learning. On his return to Spain in 1974, his career as an artist began. Between 1979 and 1988, Viejo Palacios worked intensely, a stage full of investigation of new pictorial possibilities that express a more personal painting; simultaneously more intimate and more open. An explorer of abstraction and the gestural behaviour of bodies in space, his painting are full of harmonies, metamorphosis, and atmospheres that contribute a serenity transmitted through aesthetic and tactile language.
