Nugzar Kakhiani Biography

Nugzar Kakhiani was born in Georgia and studied art in at the Nikoladze Art College and the Mukhina Institute in St. Petersburg – Russia. He started as a metal art sculptor, some of his sculptures are kept by the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg.

He however developed himself as an oil painter since working from his art studio in St. Petersburg many years ago. He is a very well known oil painter in Russia these days, very much appreciated by art lovers.

His art works, either his impressive characteristic landscapes or the semi classic theatrical performances are all with that specific light input and are all very, very colorful. Everyday’s common issues are elevated and made a special event, with various characters involved.

Art viewers are invited to step into the today’s fairytale and to investigate what happened before as well as fantasy what could happen further on. Each in his own way. There are also contradictions to be found in his art works, but they all indeed so to be very complementary.

The central themes in his works, the colorful palette and the very specific positive ambiance created by the appearance of happy characters on the canvas, allow art appreciators to embrace the work easily. This escape from the real world into a fantastic, new created reality, may well be a reactive response from the artist towards his own situation.

In various works classical women form the Greek mythology are the central figures in his work, but placed in a different time zone. Symbolism is included in his works as well as some comics, although very subtle. He always seem to be successful, his artworks to breath cheerfulness, warm feelings and optimism.

The technique used is very special and created mainly by using the knife.

It is very clear that the Russian art-audience rightly call him a ‘maestro’. He was awarded as artist of the year in Russia, a price he shared with the musician Rastropovitsj.

Regularly art critics in Russia, amongst them the Senior Curator of the Hermitage Museum publish laudatory reviews.

Nugzar Kakhiani was hardly known in Europe and the United States of America, but that has changed substantially in the last few years. Some artworks have been included in art books published by First Class editions, being ‘European Art Developments’ and ‘ International Art Vision’.

His artworks are still not too expensive, although prices increased in the last 2 years, since the introduction in the West. His works have great potential and without any doubt will raise in the coming years further on, view the upcoming international demand.

They are however still affordable and one may pick up an interesting painting, either for interesting investment or simply to enjoy the work, or even…….both.
