An artist of international fame, Pinchas Maryan worked in an abstract style. Although he was connected to various movements such as CoBrA and Nouvelle Figuration, the incredibly personal nature of his paintings makes it impossible to classify his work as a part of any specific movement.
The difficult conditions under which he lived—at 18 he lost the rest of his family in a concentration camp—are at the heart of his work. His “reality paintings”, as he liked to call them, are in large part autobiographical. “It is myself, in whatever color, that I put on the canvas”, he said.
