Art Exhibitions – How many artworks should be exhibited?

Deciding the optimal number of artworks to exhibit is not an exact science. Further, whether the exhibition in online or in a physical space (with its limitations) adds further complexity to the matter. We discussed the matter with several galleries and collectors to come up with our recommendations.

When you are dealing with physical spaces, an ideal exhibition should take into account the following matters:

Available Space: It is ideal to not excessively crowd the space, yet at the same time, to not have a very sparse feeling.

Giving Choices to the Visitors: When acquiring artworks, collectors want to feel that they are making a choice from an ample selection. They want to see the diversity of the works and then chose the one that they like the most.

When it comes to online exhibitions, the following things become even more important:

Selection: Remember that other Websites and millions of other artists are only a click away. Ensuring that you are showing enough works to enable an educated purchase decision is extremely important.

Series, Styles or Themes: If your exhibition includes works with different themes or styles, it is important to shown ample pieces, in all styles and themes that you are exhibiting.

We concluded that an artist should show between 30 – 50 works of each style or theme he/she is exhibiting. If the artist is showing works that can be classified as different themes, styles, series or periods, it is important, that the exhibition suitablely shows several examples of each.
