Shigenobu Yanagawa Biography

Japan, 1878 – 1832

A well-known Japanese painter, Shigenobu Yanagawa worked within the Ukiyo-e tradition.

First disciple, then political son, and finally adopted son of the print master Katsushika Hokusai, Yanagawa designed illustrated books and prints. His work is mainly comprised of theatrical themes, but some of his best known pieces depict geishas and erotic scenes.

An important teacher, his disciples include Kuninao, Shigeharu, Yokinobu, Shigemasa, and Shigemitsu.
