Sonia Delaunay Biography

1885 – 1979

RUSSIAN-born FRENCH master artist, Sonia Delaunay-Terk is widely acclaimed as one of the most famous female painter, printmaker and designers, of the 20th century.

In the field of art, she was primarily associated with ORPHISM (a colourful interpretation of CUBISM) and ABSTRACTION-CREATION. She made a considerable impact in the world of fashion with her hand-printed fabrics and designed creations of leading celebrities and socialites, of her time.

She was married, in 1910, to the celebrated artist, ROBERT DELAUNAY, after her brief marriage, with another fellow artist, WILHELM UHDE.

In 1964, she became the first living woman to be exhibited at the LOUVRE Museum, during her lifetime.
