Mid-career Letonian-born Israeli painter Sylva Zalmanson primarily works in the figurative style.
Working in acrylics, her subjects are often depicted in vibrant colors. In 1970, she attempted to defect from the Soviet Union to Israel in protest for the republic’s treatment of Jews. The plan was foiled by the Soviet police and Zalmanson was imprisoned in a work camp.
Zalmanson now lives and works in Israel.
