Czech Cubism: ¨From Picasso to Pavel¨

Sharp points, slicing planes, and crystalline shapes were the trademarks of the Czech Cubists, operative in Prague in the 1910s. Inspired by the revolutionary work of Braque and Picasso, Pavel Janak, Josef Gocar and others founded the Group of Artists in 1911 and helped to bring Cubism from the realm of fine arts into everyday spheres. For the Cubists the pyramid was the pinnacle of architectural design and the crystal the ideal natural form. Thus angled planes were incorporated into every work providing energy and dynamism to everything from cubist furniture, lights and wallpaper to tea sets and ashtrays.
