Independent Group: ¨The IG¨

The IG was a series of informal gatherings of a small radical group of artists, designers and critics who met at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London from 1952-1955, of whom leading figures includes artist Richard Hamilton, artist Eduardo Paolozzi, photographer Nigel Henderson and architectural writer John McHale.

The IG challenged Modernist assumptions and developed the Found Object aesthetic, that is, art created from the use of utilitarian objects. Concerning themselves with topics as broad as science and technology, advertisements, commercial music, popular American images, American car design, Western movies, science fiction and fashion, the IG introduced the topic of mass culture into artistic debates thus laying down the foundations of Pop.
