Shaker Design: ¨Shaker Simplicity¨

The Shakers are a religious group from Manchester, England that settled in New Lebanon, New York in 1770s. Their puritanical religious principles infused their hand-made furniture and artifacts from the mid-19th to the mid- 20th century.

Shaker furniture is renowned for its simplicity, durability and attention to proportion. A popular Shaker item is the wooden tilting chair - its well-designed ball-and-socket joints enable its recliner to lean backwards without breaking the chair legs.
