Taylorism: ¨Scientific Management¨

Taylorism or Scientific Management was a series of concepts produced by Frederick Winslow Taylor in his Principles of Scientific Management (1911) to improve labor efficiency. Taylorism like Fordism was a driving concept behind the industrialization of the United States and other countries in the 20th century.

Taylor applied the scientific method to work management using ¨time and motion studies¨ to determine the most effective way to perform a task. Designers in the Taylorist spirit began to apply the efficiency on the factory-floor to more domestic spheres. The Frankfurt Kitchen (1926) designed by Grete Schütte-Lihotsky for a housing project in Frankfurt am Main was an exploration of this idea.
