One of the leading modern and contemporary art museums in Japan, this museum holds both western and Japanese works, including, paintings, sculptures and photography. The museum was originally started in 1963 as an annex to the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, but was later acquired by the government of Kyoto. The new museum building was completed in 1986 and designed by Fumihiko Maki. The museum is also dedicated to the artistic movements based in Kyoto and Kansai regions of Japan.
