Eugene Atget

French photographer, best known for his photography of the Parisian street life.

A former sailor and actor, Atget did not actively work as a photographer till the age of 42. Arget began taking the pictures of the Parisian life – people, streets, stores, etc. in the 1890s through the start of the First World War. Originally, intended for museums, these images were published in his book ‘ Photographe de Paris ‘ in 1930. His works immediately attracted the attention of artists like Man Ray and Bernice Abbott. Till today, the book remains one of the most respected publications of photography.
