Barcelona, 1927 - 2007

One of the best-known contemporary painters and printmakers, Guinovart is one of the finest artists to emerge out of Spain, since 1950. A member of the DAU AL SET group of artists, he is also a co-founder of TAHULL group, with other Spanish masters like Jaume Muxart, Antoni Tapies y Joan Josep Tharrats.

Trained at the School of Arts, Llotia (Spain), he travelled to France in 1952, where he discovered artists such as MATISSE and CÃ?ZANNE and movements such as CUBISM. During his first years as an artist, he worked on murals, illustrations, advertisements and theatre sets.

While his first works were FIGURATIVE, he soon graduated to works with a more SOCIAL theme and MURALS. He soon began experimenting with materials and objects and created ASSEMBLAGES and COLLAGES. His best known works remain ones where he uses SYMBOLS and often creates a poetic dialogue amongst the elements in the work.

He has received the leading arts prize in Spain, the ?Premio Nacional de Artes Plasticas?, from the Spanish government.
