Hiroshi Asada Biography

Hiroshi Asada (1931-1997) is a Japanese painter and etcher, born into a family of nihonga, painters working according to the conventions of the traditional Japanese painting.

After studying economics at the Kyoto University, he devoted himself to painting in the tradition of Western masters, influenced by Shinseisaku Kyokai. His works dealt with the psychology of everyday life, through still lifes, with a touch of surrealism.

In 1983, ill, he returned to Tokyo and committed suicide in 1997.

He was the subject of a retrospective in 2007 at the National Museum of Modern Art of Kyoto to celebrate ten years of his death.
