Mario Avati Biography

Born in 1921 in the Principality of Monaco, Mario Avati received his training at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, then at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He lived and worked in Paris.

His work, from 1957, focuses on still lifes and animals, treated in a very geometric manner, using the difficult technique of mezzotint. In his compositions, he was inspired by the paintings of Morandi.

He also illustrated books such as Tales Cruel Villiers de L'Isle-Adam (Grolier Club, 1956) or Chimera, two tales of Lewis Carroll photographic (the unrepentant, Paris, 1955).

He received for his work numerous awards including the Prix de la Critique in 1957 and le Grand Prix des Arts of the City of Paris in 1981.

La Bibliothèque des Arts ("The Library of Art) has published his catalog raisonné.
