Marketa Luskacova Biography

Born in the Czech Republic, Marketa Luskacova is considered one of the most respected and talented photographers to come out of Central Europe, in the last twenty-five years.

In 1965, a chance encounter with a group of pilgrims near the town of Levoca, in Eastern Slovakia, was all the inspiration she needed to dedicate her life to photography. She began recording the remnants of the Christian-peasant culture of Slovakia - the Pilgrims was exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London in 1983.

When she moved to England in 1975, she soon became absorbed in the cultures of London's Brick Lane and Spitalfield's markets and their immigrant communities.

The birth of her son made the subject of children and childhood fundamental to her subsequent photography. Walks through London resulted in a beautiful and touching series about street musicians.

Her works can be found in major international and public collections.
