Richard Hamilton

Famous for his provocative collages,and mixed media prints, Hamilton is was key figure in the British Pop Art movement.

Hamilton studied at St Martin's School of Art and later at the Royal Academy Schools. He taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, along with Eduardo Paolozzi, with whom he founded the Independent Group at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London.

In 1956 he made his first and most famous pop collage entitled Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing? as a design for the poster and catalogue of the exhibition ?This Is Tomorrow? at London's Whitechapel Gallery, which he curated with other members of the Independent Group.

The first major retrospective of his work was held in 1979 at the Tate Gallery. In 1974 he had retrospectives at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Stadtische Galerie, Munich, and the Kunsthalle, Tubingen.
