Wang Guangyi (B. 1957 in China)

Born in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, Wang Guangyi graduated from the Oil Painting Department of China academy of Art in 1984. He has held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland and paris. Selected group exhibitions include: China/Avant-Garde ’89. Beijing (1989); The 45th Venice Biennale (1993); Inside Out: New Chinese Art, P.S.1 contemporary Art Center, New York (1998 - 2000); Alors, La chine?, Centre Pompidou, Paris (20 Art from the Sigg Collection, 03); Mahjong - Contemporary Chinese Kunst museum Bern, Switzerland, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany (2005 - 2006); our Future, Ullens Center of Contemporary Art, Beijing, china (2008); writing on the Wall: Chinese New Realism and Avant – Garde in the Eighties and Nineties, Groningen Museum, Groningen, Netherlands (2008).

Wang’s work has been acquired extensively by significant private collectors, public institutions and corporations such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Guangdong Museum of Art, China; the Shenzhen Museum of Art, china; the Cartier Foundation for the arts, France. Wang Guangyi is one of the first Chinese artists to experiment with Pop art. By combining two vastly different sets of pop imagery – propaganda posters from the Cultural Revolution and Western commercial brand names – in his Great Criticism series, Wang Guangyi’s art resonates with international Political Pop using a kind of sarcasm that pertains uniquely to China.
