The Day Before XVIII by Jose María Sicilia

Jose María Sicilia Biography

Madrid, Spain, 1954

Established Spanish painter and graphic artist Jose Maria Sicilia currently resides in Paris and Palma de Mallorca.

In 1980 he abandoned his studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid to move to Paris. In Paris he began his artistic career, with work that had its roots in expressionism. Sicilia was later to become one of the most prestigious young Spanish artists of the eighties.

He moved to New York in 1985, where a new structural lay-out and great simplicity in shapes allowed him to explore in depth chromatic values and textures that finally led him to discover monochromes.

In 1989 he received the National Prize in Visual Arts from the Ministry of Culture of Spain.
