Manuel Figueira Biography

Born in 1938 on the island of St. Vicente in Cape Verde and lived in Portugal between 1960 and 1974, where he held the Complementary Course of Painting School of Fine Arts in Lisbon. He returned to Cape Verde in 1975 to assist with the revitalization of popular culture. With some fellow teachers, founded the Cooperative Resistance in 1976 with the aim of keeping alive the weaving Traditional Cape Verdean. From January 1978 to March 1989 he was Director of the National Center Crafts, where artistically directed the project, designing and implementing their works, using the techniques of traditional weaving, dyeing and tapestry. He is represented in various collections including the Museum of Ovar, Portugal, the Bank Development in Lisbon, Banco Totta and Azores in S. Vicente, at the UN in New York; Palace Culture City Beach and between various private collections.
