Aung Myint Biography

Aung Myint was born in 1946 in Rangoon and is considered a pioneer in experimental art. As one of the founding members of Rangoon’s Inya Art Gallery in 1989, Aung Myint distanced his art from the traditional romanticism and instead chose to address the multitude of social and critical issues through his multi-disciplinary artistic practice that include performance and installation art. However, he is best known for ongoing “Mother and Child” series – a subtle but critical interplay between his own personal emotive and his social parameters. A self taught artist, Aung Myint has participated in numerous exhibitions and performance art projects internationally as well as in Burma. His works are in the permanent art collection of the National Art Gallery of Malaysia, Singapore Art Museum, and the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. Aung Myint has staged more than sixty shows in Burma and several in foreign countries such as Japan (1995, 1999, 2000), Singapore (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), Taiwan (1996), Malaysia (1997, 1998), Germany (1997, 1999), Netherlands (1998), Vietnam (1998), Great Britain (1999), Thailand (1999, 2001), Macau (2000), Hong Kong (2000), and Finland (2001). Aung Myint was the first Burmese artist to win a prize from the ASEAN Art Awards, in 2002 with a set of nine paintings from his Mother and Child series.
