This is a splendid formal portrait of the artist, On the wall, behind the artist, can be seen a charcoal portrait of Father Couturier which had been commissioned to decorate the Matisse chapel at Vence. It is a well known image. This Press Photograph was published in “The New York Times” in 1951.
