Note: Marianne is a symbol of Republican France. A “Marianne” is a bust of a proud and determined woman wearing a Phrygian cap. She symbolises the attachment of the common citizens of the revolution to the Republic - Marianne is Liberty, equality and Fraternity. Marianne is depicted on the famous painting by Delacroix of the bear breasted woman leading the Revolutionaries to Victory or Death carrying the tricolour flag. Cocteau was associated with Marianne in a number of ways. Probably the most well known was his design of a French postage stamp engraved by Albert Decaris. Marianne was the subject of several drawings made by the artist who was a patriotic Frenchman.
