Lina Gadelha Biography

Brazil, 1938

Mid-career Brazilian-American painter Lina Gadelha works in an expressive style using vibrant colors.

Gadelha's life has been one of movement and change. She was born in the Brazilian Amazon jungle in 1938, and later immigrated to the United States. This dramatic cultural and geographical shift prompted an explosion of artistic expression in her work.

Gadelha first found artistic success with poetry. Her Livro De Poemas was published when she was just nineteen, and later Saudades de Casa was published along with a group of other South American poets by the University of California.

Gadelha works in a variety of mediums including acrylic, collage, oil, pastel, watercolor, wire armature and woodcut printmaking. Her paintings depict the human form and landscape. Complex visages dominate her works, along with lush landscapes, thriving with natural beauty.
