Note 1: The original plate for this etching was made in 1933 but only 3 or 4 proofs were pulled from it. An edition was published, many years later, by Gallerie Louis Leiris and the copper was defaced in 1979. Picasso at the time of the making of his etching was living mainly in his chateau at Boisgeloup , near Gisors, which he had bought in 1930 and had began his relationship with Marie Therese Waller which was one of the most significant and influential in his life. The artist worked a lot in the sculptural medium and was interested in the process called “ Physiognomic Slippage”. He created 4 sculptures at this time of his muse and lover. The topography of the face is changed and nose and forehead fuse into a powerful overall form. Our etching was based very much on these powerful sculptures which can be seen today in the Picasso Museum in Paris. In this ancient setting two huge pieces - one in bronze and the other in plater, stand close to each other dominating the main stairway. This portrait is one of Picasso's depiction's of surrealism and although Picasso always refused to be part of this movement nevertheless it can be seen that he was heavily influenced by some of its precepts.
