Richard Ross’ primary concern is the exploration in paint of the shamanic - and by shamanic Ross is referring to the overlap between the mythical/fictional and the factual - a space where a new reality is born. He finds these shamanic spaces on the boundaries between space and place, body and soul, event and setting, and seeks to render them by finding those same boundaries in paint as a material, a medium and a historical cannon.
Richard Ross often begins with moments and images drawn from his own personal experience but can also be inspired by shifts or events in the cultural zeitgeist. He hopes that his paintings are spaces in themselves where a viewer may experience the alien but familiar sense of the shamanic, psychedelic or spiritual.
Richard Ross graduated with a BA (Hons) Art Practice from Goldsmiths, London in 2011, and currently lives and works in Manchester.
