Sargent, John Singer

John Singer Sargent

(Florence 1856 - London 1925)

American painter best know for his portraits. In a time when the art world was focused on impressionism and emphasizing artistic individuality, Sargent emphasized his own form of Realism and regularly did commissioned portraits of the wealthy. His portraits subtley captured the individuality and personality of his sitters, harkening the paintings of Velazquez. During his youth, and again after 1910, he deserted portrait painting long enough to produce a large number of brilliant landscapes in watercolor, many of them painted in Venice and the Tyrol. In recent years, was subject to a wide-spread critical reappraisal and stands as one of the great portraitist of all time.
