Grosz, George

George Grosz
(Berlin, 1893- 1959)

German-born American painter, and a key exponent of the Dada movement in Europe.

Trained at the Dresden Academy and the School of Arts and Crafts in Berlin, he became a prominent figure in the Dada movement and later of the Neue Sachlichkeit. He initially gained reputation with his watercolors, portraits and drawings, in particular works where he depicted the social decay and disintegration, such as Das Geschihct der herrschenden Klasse ( The Face of the Ruling Class) and Ecce Homo.

After his move to America, he became dedicated to themes such as landscapes, still-lifes and portraits.
