Hartigan, Grace

Grace Hartigan
(Newark, 1922)

American painter, and a key figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement.

Recognized as one of the most famous female artists in America, her works are often influenced by de Kooning. In describing her style, she wrote: ‘ I want an art that is not abstract and not realistic…my subject concerns that which is vulgar and vital in modern American life, and the possibilities of its transcendence into the beautiful. I do not wish to describe my subject…’.

Her works can be found at several major American museums, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota.
