Damien Hirst
(Bristol, 1965)
British painter and sculptor, known as much for his shocking art as for his skills in self-publicity and quite possibly the most famous of the recent British artists. Rejected by the St Martins School of Art, Damien Hirst received his training at the Goldsmith’s College. A morbid character, his most familiar works are those where he uses dead animals and fish for raw materials. His works have made him a favorite not only of his local butchers but also of the Saatchi Collection. His famous pieces, include, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, consists of a dead shark floating in a large tank and Mother and Child Divided, where he chops up a cow and a calf into halves and puts them in four tanks. The latter was exhibited at the Tate Gallery, London.
In 1997, Damien Hirst expressed his literary talents in a book titled I Want to Spend the Rest of my Life Everywhere, with Everyone, One on One, Always, Forever. Cosmo Landesman of the Sunday Times of London called this book ‘ an obscene love letter from an artist to himself’.
