R.B. Kitaj
(Cleveland, 1932- )

American-born painter and printmaker, mainly active in England, widely regarded as one of the leading exponents of Pop art, in Europe.

Trained at the Cooper Union in New York and Rushkin School and Royal College of Art in England, Kitaj is a contemporary of artists, such as David Hockney and Allen Jones. A major proponent of figurative art, his most characteristic work resembles comic strips, with large areas of flat color and linear composition.

Kitaj regards the late 19th-century French art and his Jewish heritage as being his major influences.

Kitaj was married to the late American artist, Sandra Fisher.
