French artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the most well known and loved artists of the 20th century. Matisse was most recognized as a painter, but he also worked as a sculptor and printmaker. During the 1920s, Matisse was recognized as a "Fauve" (literally, "wild beast"), a designation for artists of the time who used bright, intense coloring in their painting.
