Study XXVI can be viewed as an impressionistic approach of the theme. The stern of the galleon on the left panel brings the viewer forward into the central panels where a subtle side view of a galleon moves back and forth within “watery” washes. Finally, the picture seems to exit with the bow of another sailing ship coming forward onto the viewer.
