Kandinsky, Wassily

Wassily Kandinsky

(Moscow, 1866- 1944)

Russia-born French and German painter, printmaker and teacher, accredited as one of the founders of Abstract art. Initially trained as an economist and lawyer, Kandinsky began devoting himself completely to art after his training at the Munich Academy. His early work was primarily landscapes, influenced by Art Nouveau and Russian folk art.

Over time and under the influence of Fauvism, he began simplifying forms with his works, until he eliminated all representational contexts and reached abstract art. His abstract works range from geometric abstraction to more organic abstracts and even surrealist pieces.

His works can be found at all leading collections of the world including, the Lenbachhaus, Munich, the Guggenheim Museum, New York and Pompidou Center, Paris.
